How to View and Edit WAV Metadata

WAV audio files can have metadata (or "tags") embedded in them, in conformance with the format standard.

There are several possible metadata formats for WAV, including the following:

  • INFO
  • XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform)
  • ID3v2 tag
  • Broadcast Audio Extension (Bext)
  • ISRC
  • iXML
  • Cart Chunk

WAV files can hold any number of metadata formats concurrently. A WAV file that contains Bext metadata is known as Broadcast Wave Format. (BWF)

It's possible to edit the different types of WAV metadata with an appropriate software that has been designed for this purpose. MetadataTouch™ is an offline desktop-based multi-format metadata / tag editor for Windows®, that, among its capabilities, can edit seven WAV metadata formats. It can do so one file at a time, and its Professional Edition can also do so in a group of files en masse. The batch editing can easily be applied to multiple files across multiple folders in one go. MetadataTouch™ can also export & import metadata templates for easy reuse in other files. It has a simple & straightforward graphical user interface, (GUI) with an integral file explorer, making it ideal for easily editing metadata.

The integral File Properties Viewer of Windows can only show a small number of INFO properties in WAV files.
